Uganda, Nigeria lead groups in Cup of nations

National football teams in groups A and B in the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament taking place in Egypt have completed their first matches with Uganda surprising DR Congo with a 2-0 defeat.

Uganda recorded their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 41 years  when  the Cranes’ 23-year-old forward Patrick Kaddu opened the scoring, heading in from a corner after a well-timed run to the near post after 14 minutes.

Strike partner Emmanuel Okwi’s glancing header from a free-kick  doubled the lead three minutes after half-time.

Egypt defeated Zimbabwe 1-0 in the tournament’s opening match on Friday.

Uganda will next face Zimbabwe on Wednesday while DR Congo take on Egypt later that day.

In group B matches played on Saturday, Nigeria beat Burundi by a lone goal to take the lead in the group while Guinea and Madagascar shares two goals a piece.

Odion Ighalo score in the 77th minute gave Nigeria the lead in the group.
